The reasons for my solitude during these years were threefold: I was a girl, my family was solidly middle class, and I was a day student. These last two qualities often went together, since the school was located in one of the state's less well-to-do counties. In this way, I was segregated based on sex, economic status, and connectedness to the boarding community.
